   Pretty great device. I've taken a sip from many a questionable water source through this thing and have never gotten sick. It's a little inconvenient to actually have to get down on your hands and knees to take a drink (unless you have another container to put the water in), but having a LifeStraw around while camping is very comforting. It's also very lightweight.

   Hiking on the PCT we brought a Steripen for main use and a Lifestraw for backup. Really glad we made this decision. Hiking in drought conditions, often the only water sources we had were not much more than murky puddles. Although our Steripen worked fine, it doesn't do anything for filtering out the muck and organic material. Used our Lifestraw to drink the swamp-like water, and it tasted amazing. We'd fill up our water bottles with the muddy water and drink out of them using the steripen. Just watch out, it takes some perseverance to get it working the first time. Make sure to test it out at home before you really need it.

   My brother and I kayaked in 100+ degree weather for three days. We originally had two Sawyer mini filters and 6 gallons of water between us. Our plan was to refill our water bladders with the sawyers but on the end of day two both filters failed. We were able to flush them and get them to work again when we got home but in the heat of the moment they failed us. I had purchased two of these and they didn't let us down. We stayed hydrated and I've since bought two spares as backups and switched to the platypus filter system. I highly recommend having multiple ways to access clean water.

   I have owned several of these in survival and hurricane supply kits for many years but never put one to use. I went on a distance hike on a day that turned out to be unusually warm. I had a camelback and a spare water bottle off of my mountain bike. Ended up rupturing the bladder of the pack and losing all of the water out of it. I was left with my water bottle and my lifestraw. Water everywhere, being marshlands of Southern Florida. I could have used the straw directly in any of them, but I just resorted to filling the bottle and drinking it out with the straw. I lived, so I know it works. I probably would not have made it home had I not had it with me. Buy one! Buy several!

The suction part is no where in comparable to sipping out of a straw, but I have owned other life straws and the power it takes to drink from these are the same. No one has gotten sick. We have used in the lake and in some streams. A lot lighter than carrying a gallon of water.

   You're hiking along and you've gone through all your water maybe unexpectedly and what do you do. Go thirsty for the rest of the hike? Nope, you break out the Lifestraw and use it to hydrate the rest of the trip. We found ourselves in the Tetons and had missed our mark for a trail that we ended up hiking 4 extra miles we didn't need to hike to get to. We finally got to the lake and we were out of water. LIfestraw to the rescue. We filled our water bottles, dropped the straw inside the bottle and drank away. This is a great solution for hikers who don't want use chemicals and the like but want to have a way to safely drink the water around them.

   We bought these for our hurricane kits. Most of the press and reviews are positive so I’ll stick with that. I haven’t had to use it fortunately, and I don’t really feel like testing it just because I can. We bought two as a redundancy and feel better about our emergency water situation because of them. I’d couple these with purification tablets just to be extra safe. You can only carry so much water, but these are very portable.

   Unlike so many of the 4 and 5 star reviews I actually opened the package, read the instructions and tested the product. Honestly I cannot believe there are so many lame reviewers out there who rate this product highly and say they haven't actually used it but think it's a great idea. C'mon people!!! Don't write a review unless you've at least tested the product. Since I always begin with 1 and 2 star reviews I had to test this when it arrived. At least those folks actually used the product!! Enough complaints out there that I was concerned.

   Very lightweight and not too big tha I do not notice it in my pack. Used it one time to test it before I needed it in an emergency situation. Easy to use - put straw in water & drink. Easier than boiling and better tasting than purification tablets. Not great as a primary filtration system since you drink through this and then store it for long hikes but very useful as a backup.

When getting water through the straw requires more sucking effort, this indicates filter is clogging up with "stuff" and should be replaced with a new one.
