I've had this for 4 years and never used it until this summer. A friend and I were on a 170 mile backpacking trip and the pumping handle on our filter broke only 3 days in. We had iodine as a backup, but since it was a backup, that ran out about 2 days short of finishing. We had enough fuel that we could boil water, but that is time consuming, and we didn't have containers to allow us to cool it or carry it without stopping for a while. By using this to drink a lot of water while stopped at a water source, we could get away with boiling 1 quart each for our Nalgene bottles for drinking later. And then we carried untreated water in our hydration bladders. Then we could either use that for cooking or boil and drinking later.

This is my third LifeStraw. I do a lot of hiking and camping, and these have always been in my backpack. I have used these on some very funky water sources and have had no issues. I’ve had to use it several times on the lake where otherwise I would have been severely dehydrated. Filters great. Personally, I only drink from PUR water filters as I’m a bodybuilder and regulate my diet to this point. This filter does just as well and it’s direct. It is quite difficult to bring the water to the straw but I don’t mind knowing that my water is pure. A child most likely couldn’t use it...but it could save your life.

I frequently hike and camp in the backcountry all over the United States. Carrying the amount of water that I need to survive during these trips is just not feasible due to the weight. In the past I always carried a General Ecology First Need XL water purifier and refilled nalgene bottles with it. Since getting a LifeStraw I most likely won't be doing that any longer since the LifeStraw is smaller and lighter than the First Need XL. I recently took a LifeStraw out for a test on a backcountry hike in the Rocky Mountains. Every stream, lake, or other water source that I came across I stopped for a drink. I was drinking fresh snow melt and also from lakes that are home to beavers and other wildlife. There was no added taste to the water and I didn't get sick during or after the trip.

We used the straw to drink from streams on a few day hikes. For water that was hard to reach with the straw and our face, we just treated one of our bottles as dirty water and scooped up water with that bottle and then drank it using the straw. It worked very well. Very impressed.
