This thing is no joke! I took it backpacking on Maine's Bigelow range. When I ran out of the water I brought, I was A-ok with this. Just bring a wide mouth bottle to fill with water you find. On top of one of the lower peaks, I drank from the most disgusting looking crevice filled with brown scum (see photo). I thought, this is going to be safe, but taste horrid. WRONG. TASTED LIKE THE FRESHEST SPRING WATER. Better than any tap. I'm from Maine, and I've tasted plenty of water right from mountain springs, so take my word. One caution: it can be a little challenging to start. You have to prove it by soaking. If it still doesn't work, blow into it a bit.

Convenient water purification filter for edc, to keep in your bugout bag and/or get home bag. Great item to carry on the trail especially when you consider its weight vs the weight of the amount of water that it can filter. Just make sure that you remember that this filter is only good for viruses/protozoea, dirt/grit, etc, it is NOT for filtering out heavy metals. Always be careful about knowing the water source and its likely impurities (for example a river with a paper mill likely has mercury contamination, especially near the mill and if possible you need to find another water source or at the very least move upstream from the mill as far as you can for safety). You will also need to remember to blow out the filter after its use before storing it for its next use or you will likely find it clogged when you next need it. As for the other filters similar to the Lifestraw on the market, you get what you pay for and in this case that can be the difference between life and death.

So I use this a little differently. I seem to never have the time and energy to constantly be buying gallons of water or packs of bottled water. No, they're not crazy heavy, but they're heavy enough that it's a big inconvenience. After buying water for years (because I grew up in an area where you can't drink tap water and it still feels weird for me), I bought this life straw. I'm an occasional hiker and traveler, but I don't travel enough to need this for its actual use. I just get a bowl of tap water and use this straw on it sometimes when I don't have any water to drink at home.

I went on a 12 mile hike and used it to drink out of a well that pumped water to a metal tub for horses to drink. There was moss at bottom of tub. Next day I got really sick with stomach cramps and diarrhea. I will boil water from now on before using this to remove taste.

This is great for good clean water. You never know when this will come in handy. I’ve used this hiking and when under water advisory before. With all the craziness going on in the world, I would definitely keep one or a few of these stocked in your emergency kit. I keep one in the car emergency kit as well as my first aid kit. Overall this is a great buy.

I don't travel anywhere without my lifestraw. I've used my straw to drink from the sink everywhere in the world and I have never once gotten sick. I used it in India, China, Thailand, Brazil, Colombia, and all over the US. I also take it with me when I go hiking or camping, but I only use it in emergencies. The straw is perfect size to fit anywhere- luggage, backpack, purse, etc. It's easy to use and to clean. It takes a bit of time to fully dry out, but I just leave it open draining near the sink overnight before packing it up again. The first lifestraw I got in 2017 recently got blocked up and stopped working. I tried to get it to work by doing a bunch of stuff I found on the internet, but it is probably done for. I bought a new one because it is 100% worth the price and has saved me on so many occasions. It has also really helped reduce my plastic consumption, since I've been able to drink tap or boiled tap water in many places where I would have had to buy water bottles.
