Over 1 month using this tool for my fish tank, it is way better than my siphon vacuum cleaner. Very powerful suction, I would say too powerful if you don't adjust the flow control dial. The first time I use it to suck some poop out, before I know it, half of tank is gone. Now I mostly use the mesh filter, let the cleaned water return, super easy and painless, and my 2 gold fish are happy. The filter itself is easy to wash and clean. My only con is the pump has to be all soaked in the water to work, so for my turtles who enjoy low water level, this does not work at all. But just for my fish, this deserves 5 stars, I would never go back to my siphon cleaner.

I don't have any problem getting the water out of my tank as a simple siphon and a long tube would do the work. But to get the water in, I used the garden hose from the front yard as it is close to the goldfish aquarium that is sitting in the living room. However, it is difficult to do this in winter time as it is cold in Arkansas from Dec to Feb, even Arkansas is located south. The water from the front yard garden hose is cold. It is not good to let the goldfish encounter the cold water directly. I had to put the goldfish into the other 5-gallon tank, and then do the water change. When the water temperature is heated up, I put the goldfish back to the big tank again which is a pain in the winter time.

Not to mention when water level gets low enough, you always accidentally break the suction and stop the flow. The nuisance has certainly yielded me from cleaning tank more often. Most of the time I just took out half tank then top off with fresh water. This water pump certainly takes much of those hassle out of water changes. It eliminates spilled and dripping water on my carpet and floors. The best thing is I don't need to shovel gravels out to clean the bottom of the tank. The built in feature of the vacuum can pick up all the wastes hiding in the gravels without going through removing and refill. Should have got this earlier. The fish enjoy clean water and this allows me to complete water changes so quickly when I see numbers I don't like. It does the job I need it to,very effective.
