Don't be confused - it isn't flashy strobe effects, it is how the colors change if you want a changing colors setting. You can leave it on one color the entire time if you want to. He plugs it in to charge during his two hours of "chill time" and we love that it is fully charged and by the time he wakes up in the morning it is off. That being said it is entirely off. No charge at all. So if you want to use it during the day you have to charge it some more. We love that we can carry it around with us, but the sensor on the bottom to change the colors is sensitive to touch. This thing is super durable as well. No worries about accidentally dropping it and it breaking. While we haven't done so, I am not concerned if this falls off his tall dresser, or the cat randomly decides it is a toy.
