(4) AAA batteries is needed if you do not want to use the usb cord. The light is super bright, and let me tell you that you can see everything! I'm talking about anything like makeup residue, dry skin, scars, and clogged pores. I hate the fact that I can see everything on my face, but at the same time I love it. It makes it much easier to see where to clean my pores out, and also where to evenly apply makeup.
